How many times have you heard the phrase “thinking outside the box”? I’m sure you’ve heard it every other day, week, etc.
So, what does that phrase mean really? When you think outside the box, you’re coming up with ideas or solutions people don’t normally think of, or trying to find a way through a challenge that isn’t normal and even developing habits in your job, fitness, spiritual journey, etc. that aren’t normal.
See how I italicized the word normal. Good, stay away from it.
Let me quote one of the best lines I’ve ever heard and it comes from Martin Rooney’s “Into the Roar” podcast I’ve been listening to the last few months:
“This world will try to cram you into a box.”
100%, brother.
Every day we are told what can’t be done, what we lack the ability to do and that a certain goal, task or challenge is impossible. We are doubted on a daily basis by our peers, the company/organization we work in and sometimes even our family members! Everybody expects you to live your life in a box.
Why? Because it’s normal (see that word?) It’s completely normal for others to critique your work ethic, doubt your abilities and believe you’re delusional because of the standards you set for yourself.
Everyone is afraid of different. That’s how it is and how it will always be. “Thinking outside the box” is a rare occurrence and everybody wants what is simple, normal and easily attainable.
Here’s the thing: Stop being normal. Normal is boring.
When the world tries to cram you into a box, tells you what you can and can’t do and belittles the dreams/goals you have for yourself, be different.
You want to be different? Here’s how you do it:
- Smile
- Believe in yourself
- Believe in your abilities
- “BE STRONG” (Thanks, Todd Durkin)
- Remember “WHY” you do what you do every day and who you do it for
- When someone tells you no, you will tell them YES
We only have one life, guys. So why not make the decision to be different than everybody else? Why not make the decision to “think outside the box”? Why not believe in what you’re doing? Why not be the best version of yourself every day?
Answer those questions today and every day.
