In 1958, the US government appointed the FDA (Food and Drug Administration) to oversee the safety of our food supply. So one would assume that the FDA approval means that food is good for us, right? Their success depends on your definition of health.
WRONG! In 1997, the FDA began allowing companies to determine if substances, ingredients, additives are safe for human ingestion. Each company does research on their product and then gets to choose what statistics they want to share with the FDA. In order to achieve approval, the company simply needs to prove the lack of possibility of 3 main things…..
- Acute Toxicity/Death: The ingredient is not going to cause sudden death because of toxicity in the body. The companies don’t take into consideration the other side effects that lead to death and a poor life such as weight gain, glucose intolerance, poor gut health (leaky gut, glutton intolerance, etc), compromised immune systems, and so much more.
- Birth Defects: The ingredient will not cause birth defects in the first generation that is consuming it.
- Carcinogenic Effects: The person consuming the product will not develop cancer cells from the ingredient. Unfortunately, they don’t have to prove that the ingredients will not metastasize already existing cancer cells or create an environment that encourages illness and disease.
Although we didn’t touch on the mental aspect, this is an area that, as of recently, is being heavily researched due to the incredible increase in mental diseases including ADHD, anxiety, and depression in kids! What is in our food is affecting us…
Now, I will be the first to say don’t blame the FDA, the US government, or even the producers of the questionable substances because ultimately each one of us is responsible for what we ingest and what we give our kids to eat. Take time to read and research with websites like EWG.org or chemicalcuisine.org to figure out exactly what we are consuming.
Money talks so if we stop spending our money on things that we know are negatively impacting our health they will notice. We often think that we don’t matter but trust me they know every single .001% profit and they will notice when it isn’t coming in anymore. Take the stand today!
The other option we have is to DEMAND better standards. If we speak loud enough someone will hear us and we can make the change that will create a positive impact on the future of our kids, grandkids, and great grandkids!
